It was the very first day of 1776. George Washington led an army in Boston.

They battled the British army for freedom.

This was the American Revolution.

On one side was the Continental Army.

On the other side were the famous British soldiers, the Redcoats.

Washington asked his soldiers to fly their flag.

But this Grand Union flag looked too much like the British flag.

“We need a new flag,” Washington thought.
