Golden Fire Hydrant

“More water!” shouted a fireman.

The firemen worked tirelessly to fight the flames.

It was April 20, 1906. A giant earthquake had hit San Francisco. Now the city was burning.

People ran from their homes to the safety of a wide-open park.

“We’re out of water,” a woman cried. “We can’t fight the fire!”

The people watched as the flames came closer.

A man named John stood in the park. He looked around.

On the corner he saw one lone fire hydrant. It had not been used yet.
