A long time ago, there lived a girl named Harriet Tubman. She lived in Maryland.

Her parents were slaves. This made her a slave too.

Harriet did not like being a slave. Her master would hit her.

She wanted to be free.

Harriet had heard about a secret road to freedom.

It was called the Underground Railroad. It was not a real railroad. It was a series of roads and secret hiding places. It would take her to the free states in the north.
