Jack and the Beanstalk

Once upon a time there was a boy named Jack. He lived with his mother in a small cottage. They owned only one thing—a cow.

One day, Jack’s mother told him to sell the cow at the market. They would use the money to buy food and clothing.

At the market, a man offered to buy the cow.

“I don’t have any money,” said the man. “But I’ll trade these magic beans for the cow. If you plant them, you will become rich.”

Jack agreed. He ran home to show the beans to his mother.

Jack’s mother was angry. “You silly boy!” she scolded. “You sold our cow for a handful of worthless beans!”

She threw the beans out the kitchen window. Jack was sent to bed without dinner.

Jack woke up early the next morning. He went outside to start his chores.

Jack was amazed by what he saw! The beans that his mother had thrown out the window had grown into a giant beanstalk. It reached all the way up into the sky.
