It was the return of the White Rabbit that had caused the trembling, and when he spotted little Alice, he mistook her for someone else entirely. “Why, Mary Ann, what are you doing out here? Run home this moment and fetch me a pair of gloves!” demanded the White Rabbit. |
Thinking it best to do as the White Rabbit said, especially as she was such a small size, Alice ran off as fast as she could. She stopped when she saw a neat little house. A brass plate on the door said, “W. Rabbit.” The most logical place for gloves was in the tidy room upstairs, so there Alice searched, and there Alice found them. |
Upon a side table, Alice spotted a bottle quite like one she had seen before. Since everything she swallowed seemed to change her size, Alice put the bottle to her lips and took a drink, hoping it would make her bigger. And that it did. Her head was suddenly pressing against the ceiling, her leg shoved up the chimney, and an arm out the window. |
A rattle came at the room’s door, but it would not open with Alice pressed against it. “Mary Ann! Mary Ann!” said the Rabbit. “Bring me my gloves this moment!” The White Rabbit retreated from the door before appearing again at the window. “There’s a monster in my house!” he screamed. |
“What a horrible mess I’m in now!” Alice cried. A burst of stones crashed through the window. As she watched, the pebbles turned into little cakes. She gulped down one and it shrank her back to a normal size. Outside, the White Rabbit had gathered his friends to deal with the giant intruder. Alice thought it best to disappear into the forest. |
Alice was wandering through blades of grass as tall as she was when she spotted a Caterpillar lounging on a mushroom. “Who are you?” said the Caterpillar. Alice replied, “I hardly know, sir, just at present. At least I know who I was when I got up this morning, but I think I must have changed several times since then.” |
