Bayani and the Coconuts

Bayani and his father woke very early.

“Time to go to the market, Son,” Dad said.

Bayani was excited. This was his first trip to the market with Dad.

Bayani and Dad filled up the cart with coconuts. They had picked them from the village trees.

Plunk! Plunk! Bayani threw each coconut into the cart.

The cart was piled high with coconuts.

Then they hitched the water buffalo to the cart.

“I can’t wait to get there!” Bayani said. “How long will it take to reach the market, Ama?”

“We should travel slowly,” Dad said. “If we rush, the trip will be much harder.”

That made no sense to Bayani. He was upset.

“How can going slower be better?” he said. “I want to go fast so that we can be the first ones to the market!”

Bayani jumped into the cart. “Let’s go!” he said to the water buffalo.

He rushed the water buffalo and cart along the path. Dad walked along behind them.
