Winter Dumplings

It was a freezing cold evening in China. Winter had just arrived and snow had been falling all day.

Doctor Zhang Ji trudged through the knee-deep snow on his way home after a long day.

As he turned the corner, he saw his young neighbor, Chen De. Chen was carrying a bag of groceries.

“Hello, Doctor,” Chen said. “May I walk with you?”

“That would be nice,” replied the doctor.

On the way, they saw an old man sitting on a bench. He shivered in the freezing cold.

“Where are his hat, mittens, and coat?” asked Chen.

“Some people do not have warm clothes,” said the doctor.

Then they saw a woman holding her baby. The child looked very ill.

“Why are they out in the cold? Why don’t they go inside?” asked Chen.

“Some people do not have a home,” said the doctor.
