Grunt and Growl

A long time ago, ice covered the land all year round. This was called the ice age.

It was cold, but the cavemen didn’t mind. The ice made it easy to get around. They slid across the ice on stone skis. They glided over the snow on stone sleds.

Then, the ice and snow melted. The ice age had finally ended. The ground was covered with dirt and grass and rock.

Some of the cavemen tried to ski across the dirt or sled across the grass.

It didn’t work very well.

“We need a new way to get around,” caveman Grunt said one day.

“We used to have stone skis and sleds,” Growl said. “Let’s make something new out of stone!”

They each found a big boulder and got to work.

Grunt chipped away for days. Finally, he said, “All done! Look what I’ve made!” He held up two wings made out of stone.

“Wow! That's great!” Growl said. “Who needs to walk when you can fly?”
