Little Martin's Big Dream

Martin was playing with his friend Billy. They were building a fort.

It was their last chance to have fun. The next morning they started school.

“Maybe we’ll have the same teacher,” Martin said. “That would be neat.”

Billy shook his head. “I’m going to a different school. I’m going to a school for white kids.”

Martin and Billy lived in the south. Back then there was segregation. In places like schools and buses, black people were separated from white people.

“Oh, well... I’ll see you after school tomorrow, then?” Martin asked.

“For sure,” Billy said. “We’ll finish our fort!”

The friends headed home to get a good night’s rest.
